At ADAPT’s 2024 Edge events, seven expert-led panel discussions tackled these pressing challenges, providing actionable insights for enterprises navigating this transformation.
The panels explored critical themes such as leveraging AI for measurable outcomes, aligning technology with overarching business strategies, and building resilient, data-driven cultures.
Leaders shared pragmatic strategies for enhancing operational efficiency, adopting agile methodologies, and driving innovation across finance, infrastructure, and cyber security.
These discussions set a clear agenda for organisations seeking to thrive in an increasingly competitive digital landscape.
1. Microsoft, NAB, and NextDC tech leaders discuss AI readiness and infrastructure demands
At the Cloud & Infrastructure Edge panel, Rahul Arya, Group Chief Architect at NAB, highlighted the need for secure and scalable cloud infrastructure to support AI growth.
Sarah Carney, National CTO at Microsoft ANZ, focused on ROI-driven strategies and emphasised prioritising impactful AI use cases.
Craig Scroggie, CEO of NextDC, detailed the shift to accelerated computing and the critical role of sustainable data centres in meeting rising compute demands.
The panel stressed the importance of collaboration with cloud providers and strategic planning to address AI’s evolving infrastructure challenges.
Together, these industry leaders offered actionable insights for balancing innovation with operational resilience.
2. AGL, UTS, and KordaMentha CISOs discuss driving top-down cyber security strategies
Maryam Bechtel, CISO at AGL; Anna Aquilina, CISO at the University of Technology Sydney; and Tony Vizza, Executive Director of Cyber Security at KordaMentha, shared strategies for effective cyber leadership in this Security Edge panel.
Maryam emphasised aligning cyber security with business goals and implementing defensible risk plans, while Anna stressed the need for tailored communication to engage executives and ensure leadership at every organisational level.
Tony highlighted how robust governance frameworks are essential for addressing evolving cyber threats.
The panel addressed data governance challenges, with Maryam advocating compliance-driven data purging and Tony highlighting data minimisation as critical for reducing risk exposure.

3. DXC Technology, Cricket Australia, and McKinsey security experts on articulating risk and getting the support to protect and enable the organisation
Kylie Watson, CISO at DXC Technology; Donald Elliott, CIO at Cricket Australia; and Olivia Loadwick, Partner at McKinsey & Company explored strategies for articulating cyber risk and securing organisational support.
Donald emphasised aligning cyber security messaging with business goals, ensuring it functions as an enabler while resonating with stakeholders across all levels.
Kylie highlighted the role of behavioural insights and tools like nudge theory to foster secure actions, cautioning against over-reliance on technology to address risk.
Olivia advocated for shared responsibility, integrating cyber controls with business objectives to align security strategies with risk appetite.
The panel recommended wargaming exercises and scenario planning to improve preparedness and stakeholder collaboration, stressing strong leadership for managing crises effectively.
4. NAB, Telstra, and HivePix data leaders on advancing data maturity and AI integration
At the Data & AI Edge panel discussion, Joanna Gurry, Executive of Data Platforms at NAB; Dayle Stevens OAM, Executive of Data & AI at Telstra; and Claudine Ogilvie, CEO of HivePix, shared strategies to optimise data maturity and deploy AI effectively.
Joanna highlighted the collaborative nature of AI, showcasing NAB’s use of computer vision for compliance improvements.

5. Former Jetstar CIO and CISO discuss the future of cyber security in the AI and quantum era
Claudine Ogilvie, former CIO at Jetstar and HivePix CEO and Yvette Lejins, former CISO at Jetstar and Asciano, discussed evolving cyber security challenges in the age of AI and quantum computing.
Claudine highlighted the transformative potential of quantum computing and the urgency of preparing encryption systems for quantum-resilient algorithms to safeguard sensitive data.
Yvette emphasised aligning cyber security with business priorities, advising boards on risk profiles, and conducting environmental scans to identify vulnerabilities.
Both panellists stressed proactive strategies, such as leveraging AI for anomaly detection and threat management while reducing encryption points to minimise attack surfaces.

6. Estia Health, Accenture Australia, and PEXA tech leaders share strategies for progressive technology transformation
In this CIO Edge panel, Fiona Caldwell, CIO at Estia Health; Angela Coble, Managing Director, Client Group Technology Officer at Accenture Australia; and Eglantine Etiemble, CTO at PEXA, explored prioritisation and leadership for driving technological innovation.

John Hunt, CIO & Director of Group Enablement at Woolworths, and Memo Hayek, former CIO & CTO at Nine Entertainment and CBA, discussed the importance of aligning technology with business goals to achieve operational excellence at CIO Edge.
John emphasised starting with reliable core systems as the foundation for effective technology initiatives, sharing Woolworths’ proactive approach to lifecycle management to mitigate tech debt and enhance operational efficiency.
Memo highlighted that operational excellence must extend beyond reliability and availability, focusing on aligning technology investments with business objectives and demonstrating ROI to stakeholders.

Outside of Telstra, Dayle is a non-executive director at Beyond Blue, Australia’s most well-known and trusted mental health organisation, and a member of the IT Advisory Committee at Trinity College, University of Melbourne.
