In a recent conversation, Jason Murrell, a renowned cyber security advocate and consultant, discussed the complexities of modern cyber security challenges and highlighted the importance of a comprehensive approach to a solid digital defence.

While a robust firewall and antivirus are foundational, Jason emphasised the broader perspective required in cyber security, which includes employee training, policy formulation, and regular audits.

Jason noted that the swift digital transformation of organisations can introduce vulnerabilities. Integrating multiple software solutions, especially from diverse vendors, can inadvertently create weak points ripe for exploitation.

Continuous monitoring and assessment are crucial to identify and address these vulnerabilities.

Jason also highlighted the importance of role-based access controls in the cyber security framework. As our digital ecosystem becomes increasingly interconnected, it is not just about individual access but also the interactions and data sharing between systems and applications.

For organisations, Jason recommends a proactive approach. While securing legacy systems remains essential, the emphasis should be on designing new integrations and applications with security as a priority.

He anticipates a blend of traditional and contemporary security measures to be standard for businesses in the coming years.

Jason Murrell will join the Security Edge panel this October to debate critical topics such as cyber security legislation, risk intelligence, and operational preparedness and resilience with the region’s foremost cyber security leaders.
