In a recent interview, Prof. Lesley Seebeck, Chair of the National Institute of Strategic Resilience and Chief Executive at Cyber 21, shared her insights on the complexities of cyber security.
With a rich background, including her tenure as the CEO of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the Australian National University’s Cyber Institute, Lesley brings a wealth of experience to the table.
Lesley illuminated the challenges of the “dark side” of digital and data. She highlighted that while the benefits of digital transformation are evident, the associated cyber risks often lurk in the shadows.
Speaking to ADAPT’s Byron Connolly, Lesley notes these risks are not just about potential cyber attacks but encompass a broader spectrum, including issues of privacy, personal security, and even concerns such as stalking and IP theft.
Emphasising the dangers of complacency, Lesley advocates for a proactive stance. Waiting for a crisis is not an option. Organisations must be forward-thinking.
This includes not only securing data but also considering broader organisational aspects such as budgeting, recruitment, and business continuity planning.
One of the significant gaps Lesley identified is the knowledge disparity among decision-makers. She is currently collaborating with the University of New South Wales to develop professional education courses targeting these key individuals.
The aim is to equip them with the necessary tools to make informed decisions in the face of cyber threats.
Prof. Lesley Seebeck will speak at the upcoming Security Edge event this October to discuss the perceptions of ‘cyber’ and strategies for CISOs and CIOs to enhance cyber resilience.
