ADAPT’s Research and Advisory leadership team reveals the latest fact-based insights, distilled from over 1,000 in-depth surveys and 10,000 conversations with the region’s top IT leaders in the last year.

Though the impetus for creating a data-driven organisation waned in 2020 due to a need to prioritise short-term tactical plays, CIOs across Australia and New Zealand are again embracing the imperative to consume proprietary customer insights as essential fuel for growth.

In this CIO Edge presentation, ADAPT’s Director of Strategic Research, Matt Boon, explores the latest findings direct from the Australian CIO community.

He outlines the top business priorities of Australia’s top CIOs, the focus of technology initiatives being executed, and a top-line overview of shifting workloads to the cloud.

What are some of your top business priorities?

Normally, when we present this insight at these events, we clump everything together to give the overall top 10 views in terms of what priorities organisations are facing within the local marketplace.

When collated altogether, improving operational effectiveness, creating a data driven organisation come up as the top two priorities collectively for organisations.”

We wanted to break that down a little bit into organisational size to see where there are differences. If you look at the first small and medium business angle, it’s really about how can we do things more efficiently?

How can we optimise expenditure, resources and budgets more effectively? How can we do that to really understand or identify new revenue opportunities and new business opportunities?

We need to redefine the business for the small and medium-sized businesses amongst us. How can we identify new business opportunities as we move through the next 12 months?

Moving through to the mid-market area, we see operational effectiveness being key for many organisations.

What we did see over the last 12 months was we transformed dramatically, we achieved so much. But we didn’t do some of those things as efficiently as we could have done from an operational point of view.

There’s a heightened focus on how we can now be more operationally efficient within our organisation.

When we get to the enterprise side of things, how can we leverage data more effectively?

We have so much data, so how can we leverage that effectively, to drive better business outcomes and make better decisions?”

Also, how do we make sure we’ve got the right skills within our organisation to help us achieve that?

When you get to the very large organisations optimising costs is the number one business priority. This isn’t all about really reducing costs and cutting costs.

Large organisations are focused on optimising our expenditure? I like to think of it as cost correction.

How do we rethink budgets? How do we balance the OpEx for the CapEx side of expenditure within our organisations.

We do see attracting retaining talent coming in at similar importance.

As we consider creating a data-driven organisation and identify new business models, how do we make sure we’ve got the right skills within our organisation to do that?

Attracting talent comes back to delivering the right experiences for our employees.”
