Dom Price: More Guidance, Less Process. How to be Nimble, Autonomous and Agile with Great Teamwork – Highlights

Dom Price is Chief Futurist at Atlassian, specialising in the development of new products. He is no stranger to fostering agile teams to drive innovation.

“These teams must be coached by leadership teams to establish key values to adopt internally and externally. Two of these values must be visibility and transparency.”

Team environments are necessary to foster creativity. Dom said, “Everyone celebrates the person that achieved it but it’s never just one person. You need that cognitive diversity, the mix of people, the mix of skill sets to actually achieve greatness.”

Although diversity in teams complicates the development process, it is critical in optimising products. “It feels like a tax at first but it’s an investment.”

To effectively make decisions and collaborate, agile teams must overcome information hoarding stemming from unhealthy conflicts, and move towards visibility and respectful dissent. Price pointed out the staggering statistic that “78% of teammates said that they didn’t trust their other teammates.” He said this major barrier to agility is the result of poor communication.

He challenged technology leaders to rethink. “Communication does not occur at the mouth. It occurs at the ears and the eyes. It’s how you make someone feel, not what you said.”

For Price, the key to success is no longer efficiency but relevance. Agility is a harmonious with this focus, as it recognises the changing nature of the digital landscape.

Delayed outcomes are part of this process as Price explained “You have to let go of instant gratification. You have to be ready to be wrong. We iterate. It’s a very different mindset.”

Key takeaways:

  • In the 1950s, a Fortune 500 company had an expected lifespan of 50 years. Today it is only 20.
  • We need to shift from celebrating the individual genius to glorifying the team.
  • The hardest challenges in teamwork: conflicting working styles, deciding who to include and having a respectful argument.
  • “Visibility is critical. Hoarding of information becomes a barrier to how you collaborate.”
